2024 FGS & SGNA Joint Annual Meeting Recap

This September, professionals from across the gastroenterology field gathered at the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista for the 59th Annual Meeting of the Florida Gastroenterologic Society (FGS) and 48th Annual Joint Meeting of the FGS and the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA). Over the span of three enriching days, attendees shared insights, participated in interactive workshops, and celebrated the accomplishments of peers.

The meeting commenced on Friday, September 6, with early afternoon registration, followed by the setup for Fellow Poster Board presentations. This was a precursor to a series of insightful Fellow Sessions, which included discussions on maximizing chances for a GI fellowship, understanding the fellowship match process, and strategies for successful matching. The day concluded with a welcome reception in the Exhibit Hall and the President’s Reception, a chance for attendees to mingle and unwind.

Educational Sessions and Hands-on Workshops: The meeting featured a range of educational sessions across various aspects of gastroenterology. Highlights for the hands-on portions of the meeting included the first ever Ultrasound Workshop, which saw enthusiastic participation and provided hands-on learning opportunities as well as the Endoscopy Labs. These sessions underscored the meeting’s commitment to both practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

Dynamic Exhibits Enhance Learning and Networking Opportunities: The exhibit hall at the 2024 FGS & SGNA Joint Annual Meeting was a hub of activity, showcasing the latest innovations and technologies in gastroenterology. Leading companies presented cutting-edge products and technology, offering attendees hands-on experiences and expert insights.

Satellite Symposiums: Diverse learning opportunities were further provided through satellite symposiums on the second day, hosted by leading companies:

  • Madrigal Pharmaceuticals focused on the treatment for noncirrhotic NASH.
  • Sanofi introduced a novel treatment for Eosinophilic Esophagitis.
  • Castle Biosciences discussed advancements in predicting esophageal cancer progression.

Awards and Recognitions: Throughout the event, several awards were presented to honor individuals for their exceptional contributions and dedication.

Jeopardy Competition: A lively Jeopardy competition brought an element of fun and challenge to the meeting, engaging contestants in a test of their knowledge of gastroenterology. The competition was hosted by Herbert C. Wolfsen, MD.
