Fecal Calprotectin Testing Update

Dear Colleagues–

Advocacy for our patients, our profession, and the ongoing fight against inflammatory bowel disease can lead to amazing results. FGS and the CCF Engagement Council have worked hard to provide better access for patients with this debilitating disease by fighting for easier utilization of medications, better access to care, and approval of tests that aid us in decision making and treatment decisions.

With this commitment to advocate for changes, I am pleased to inform you that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida will now cover the fecal calprotectin test effective 11/15/21. Service performed and billed prior to 11/15/21 will be reviewed according to the policy in effect at that time. That means as of that date code 83993 (Calprotectin, fecal) pays per contract benefit. This was done because of issues and concerns regarding the lack of coverage brought to them by the Florida Gastroenterological Society and shows that when we stand together change can occur.

Please as members of FGS and or CCF notify these committees if there are any rejections in the future so that we can address them as an organization. Thank you for all that you do, and we will continue to advocate for necessary changes to help us all provide the best care for our patients.
