2018 FGS Annual Meeting Recap

September 16th marked the end of the Florida Gastroenterologic Society’s 53rd Annual Meeting, and what a tremendous meeting it was! Gastroenterologists, Advanced Practice Providers, GI nurses and technicians converged upon the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress this weekend for Florida’s largest GI conference this year!

Nationally-Rated Lectures

Speakers from all over the State, and several out-of-state speakers joined the course this year. Attendees heard from the likes of Dr. Brian Lacy, Dr. Kenneth Devault, Dr. Walter Coyle, Dr. Alison Schneider, Dr. Peter Draganov, and many more! Saturday’s session was standing room only!Unfortunately, Dr. Robert Bloomfeld was unable to physically attend the meeting because of Hurricane Florence, but that did not stop him from delivering his talk! Staff worked quickly to get him set up remotely and his talks were delivered without a hitch!

 


Fellow-Focused Competitions

Friday night, Fellows from Florida’s top GI fellowship arrived at the conference prepared to compete! This year, two opportunities were offered for Fellows to take home cash prizes and bragging rights! Poster Presentations were set up throughout Regency Hall awaiting to be judged by FGS leadership and the Academic Affairs Committee. Meanwhile, several of the Fellows prepared for a head-to-head competition testing their GI knowledge in a Jeopardy-based competition!

Jeopardy Winners:

2nd – Dr. Leah Katta, University of Miami

3rd – Dr. Rupal Patel, University of South Florida

Poster Presentation Winners:

1st – Dr. Pujan Kandel, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville

3rd – Dr. Yaseen Perbtani, University of Florida, Gainesville

It was a great weekend with a good blend of education and fun. With a lively Welcome Reception followed by the President’s Reception!


Hands-On Endoscopy Lab

This year marked another successfully executed Hands-On Course. This course has continued to grow in size and in reputation. As on of the most diverse hands-on opportunities in the country, it always draws a crowd! Run by course directors, Dr. Jose Nieto and Dr. Dennis Yang, this course featured 21 stations where attendees could roll up their sleeves and get some hands-on experience working with the latest equipment in gastroenterology. They also interacted with world-class instructors while performing some the most innovative procedures in North America.

In Conclusion

The 53rd Florida Gastroenterologic Society’s Annual Meeting was another success. Seeing over 400 attendees, the course continues to serve of Florida’s premiere opportunity for Florida GI professionals to receive a National-level education right here in our own backyard.
